Back up yo stuff!

A couple of weeks ago the hard drive that my dedicated server resides on died. It happened sometime between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, and my host, Surpass, got right on the diagnosis and hard drive replacement as of Monday afternoon. By Wednesday everything was transferred to a new hard drive, and by the end of the week all of my sites, as well as the other sites I host, were all up and running once again, but some data was corrupted during the hard drive failure/manual data transfer, so data had to be manually taken from backups and put onto the new drive in order to get everything restored.

It was a pain in the ass, and a frustrating process that had me in tears more than once, but if it weren’t for the backups generated using the DBC Backup plugin (I set mine to generate backups once a day and upload them to FTP), I would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

Since this happened, I’m using one other backup plugin as well – Backup Scheduler. This plugin is configured to create backups daily (though at a different time so as to not overload my server with two backup plugins running at the same time) and email them to me.

In the end, I lost one post, and one of the sites I host lost a couple of days worth of scheduled posts. Lesson learned? ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR STUFF. Even if your host claims to do back ups of their own, you need to be responsible about your data, because no one is going to care about it or cry over its loss like you will.
